W^e finally managed to getafloat with the aid of the Suiigari, which, beingsmaller, drew less THE AMUR on THE SHILKA RIVEK. The banks of the Shilka were quite lovely withtheir overhanging precipitous cliffs, covered by pineand larch. Large stretches of burnt forest borewitness to numerous wood fires. Small villages werescattered here and there, with their small woodenchurch towering over each of them. They are allstanitsas, and are inhabited by descendants of the THE BANKS OF THE SHILKA 45 Cossacks, who were the first colonists of spent that night at anchor for fear of anotherperekat, and on the morning of June 4 advancedat the slowest speed.
