The tooth filing ceremony, in Bali (Indonesia).

Among Balinese Hindus boys and girls, the tooth filing is one of the rites of passage from the child to the adult age. It has a deeply religious purpose. The dental technician (sangging) his index finger on the flat of the file (kikir) sets to work filing. Only six teeth of the upper jawbone are modified: the two canine teeth and the four incisors between them and the amount of filing done depends upon the wishes of the patients: it can consist of just either a few quick strokes or if people want, their teeth can be filed even more (Bali - Indonesia).
