Then with a body of eight thousand men Mont-calm marched south and placed his army between FortWilliam Henry and Fort Edward, in order to prevent the 190 MONTCALM AND WOLFE soldiers of Fort Edward from coming to help defend FortWilliam Henry. After a siege of three days, the men defending FortWilliam Henry saw that there was no hope of receivingaid from any direction. A white flag was raised, a drumwas beaten, and one of the English officers left the fort andapproached Montcalms tent. Montcalm agreed that theEnglish should march out with the honors of war, and thatthey should be taken to Fort Edward the next day underthe protection of French soldiers.
