The new world fairy book . ng, working very fast with allher toes; and while the maidens were looking forher inside the ring she came out at the other doorwith all her children and scampered away across theprairie. The maidens turned round and ran after them ; allbut the youngest sister, who didnt want someone tobe killed; and High-feather came out of the hole andturned himself into what he was, and caught her bythe arms. Come home and marry me, he said, and dancewith the Indian maidens; and I will hunt for you, andmy mother will cook for you, and you will be muchhappier than up in the sky. Her sisters came rushing round her, and begged herto come back home to the sky with them; but she lookedinto the young mans eyes, and said she would go withhim wherever he went. So the other maidens went weep-ing and wailing up into the sky, and High-feather tookhis Star-wife home to his tent on the bank of the BattleRiver. High-feathers mother was glad to see them both;but she whispered in his ear,— You must never let her. High-feather caught her by the arms. THE STAR WIFE 183 out of your sight if you want to keep her; you musttake her with you everywhere you go. So he did. He took her with him every time hewent hunting, and he made her a bow and arrows, only she would never use them ; she would pick wildstrawberries and gooseberries and raspberries whilethey went along, but she would never kill anything;and she would never eat anything that anyone else hadkilled. She only ate berries and crushed corn. One day, while the young mans wife was embroider-ing feather stars on a dancing-cloth, and his mother wasout gossiping in a tent at the end of the village, a littleyellow bird flew in and perched on High-feathersshoulder, and whispered in his ear,— Theres a great flock of wild red swans just over onLoon Lake. If you come quickly and quietly you cancatch them before they fly away; but dont tell yourwife, for red swans cant bear the sight of a woman, and they can tell if one comes
