LOOTING OF FOODSTUFFS BY GERMAN CIVILIANS - The civilians soon found out about these barges and quickly made their way to the canal and soon an enormous crowd lined the banks and crowded the barges, looting cheese, wine, fat, flour and rice. Many of the people were dressed in their Sunday best and mingling with the Germans were French, Polish, Dutch and Russian slave workers. Any available transport was used to carry away the loot, from bicycles to horses and carts. , British Army, 21st Army Group
