Crab boats on Cromer beach, Norfolk, England.

Crab boats pulled up on Cromer beach, north Norfolk include the red and black boat, Mary Ann, which is the last working traditional wooden crab boat working from this coast. These traditional boats were double-enders - pointed at boat ends - which minimised the effect of following waves knocking the boat sideways on beaching, thus reducing the possibility of capsize. The other boats here are glass reinforced plastic skiffs which began to appear on this coast in the 1990s, mainly because the traditional boats were worked two- or three-handed and fewer young men were interested crab fishing because of the anti-social hours. The skiffs can be worked single-handed. The residual problem is that, with most fishermen now working single-handed, there are few opportunities for newcomers to learn, even if they wanted to.
