The wateris just as clear and refresh-ing as it was a century andthree-quarters ago, andupon more than one hotsummer day has served toquench the thirst of thewriter. Conrad Beissel lost notime in clearing a pieceof laud for seeding whenspring opened. This hecultivated entirely bymanual labor. At the same time he hewed the necessarytimber to build a cabin. He completed this habitationduring the summer months. His time henceforth wasdivided between cultivating his garden and the wooing ofthe celestial Sophia, passing his hours alternately in studyand labor, and living on the simplest fare. Prelude to the New World. 185 O blessed solitary life,Where all creation silence keeps!Who thus himself to God can yieldThat he neer from him strays,Hath to the highest goal attained,And can without vexation , toleration, love and all have come to his support. During the spring and summer, when not at prayer orlabor, he devoted all spare moments toward perfecting thehymn-book which he had printed for the labors culminated in an enlarged collection of hymns, printed by Franklin, with a new title.
