The middle of the margins ofthe lids are denuded of conjunctiva, for a distance of 5 mm., just posteriorto the ciliary margins, and sewed together with silk. The edges unite andthe cornea may be inspected by turning the eye inward or outward and exam-ining through the narrow chink on either side. When it is desired to releasethe lids, they are cut apart and the wounds treated with ointment of yellowoxid of mercury (1 : 60) until they heal. Operations for entropion (inversion of the lid) are much to be preferredto the removal of the offending lashes. In mild cases an incision is carriedalong close to the margi
