Chambers's encyclopaedia; a dictionary of universal knowledge for the people . moving levers, a man standing on asmall platform can emptj the contt-nts of the huge converters intothe ladle, raise or lower the ladle itself, and turn it round frompoint to point, so as to fill the molds by means of a plug in its bot-tom. Steel made in this is not sufficiently dense, and accord-ingly the moulds are lifted off the ingots by means of a hydraulic. Beeeemer Converting Vessel., a, a, tnyeree; b, air-space; c, meltedmetal. 642 BESSEL—BETEL. crane, and the latter removed while still hot, and condensed underheavy steam-hammers. After this, they are rolled into rails, tires, plates, and other heavy objects, foi wliieh this steel is snit-able. Although, as already said, Bessemer steel will not do fortools and cutting instruments, nor even for sucii comparativelycoarse objects as the springs of railway waggons, yet the greatvalue of tlie invention is shown by the fact that 800,000 tons ofsteel are annually made by this process in Great Britain, the num-ber of converting vessels in use being about 130. (For the Thomas—Gilchrist process, see IRON.) Large quantities are also manu-factured by it in Sweden, Russia, Prussia, Belgium, and is likewise extensively employed in America, where Mr. Hayhas seemingly impi-oved the process by adding a matte of severalmetals and metalloids along witli the spiegeleisen.
