Silicon based life form. Artwork of an alien life form composed of silicon. Silicon is close to the element to carbon in the periodic table and has similar chemical properties. Like carbon, it is able to bond with other elements such as oxygen and hydrogen to form complex molecules. Some theories suggest that alien life forms could exist based on silicon chemistry. Such creatures would look crystalline and able to withstand high temperatures due to the heat stability of silicon compounds.
