The Crown Tavern, Oxford where Shakespeare stayed, 1848 illustration
Original engraving from The Illustrated London news of 30 September 1848. It was called the Crown Tavern not Crown Inn as it's mistakenly titled in the paper. William Shakespeare stayed here when it was owned by John Davenant. Shakespeare was even rumoured to be the father of Davenant’s son William who went on to become a playwright. It is a Grade II listed building, but sadly is no longer a public house. At the time of writing it is shared between Vodafone & Betfred.
