In the siege of Charleston he had charge of and commanded anaval battery on Morris Island, in the harbor, and after the capitulation ofFort Sumter, when the services of the marines were no longer required on theSouth Atlantic seaboard, the battalion of marines under the command ofColonel Reynolds, to which Mr. Slater belonged, was transferred to the marinebarracks at Washington, and there held in reserve for a considerable time. Inthe meantime the Confederate cruiser Alabama was committing depredationson the commerce of the United States, and the government fitted out a detail.
