The biomes, containing plants collected from around the world, can be seen in the bottom of the reclaimed china-clay pit that now houses the Eden Project. Tim Smit's original idea was designed by Grimshaw Architects. It took 2½ years to construct and first opened to the public on 17 March 2001. The predicted visitor numbers have been far exceeded and it is now a major tourist attraction in the West Country and the UK as a whole.
