Samuel Canning (1823-1908). 1868 illustration of the English engineer and pioneer of the underwater (submarine) telegraph cable Sir Samuel Canning. In 1857, Canning assisted Charles Bright in the construction and laying of the first transatlantic cable in 1857 and 1858. He also laid cables in the deep waters of the Mediterranean and other seas and was appointed chief engineer of the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company after its formation in 1865.
