He soondiscovered, however, that, although less erroneous perhapsthan some of its predecessors, it contained a sufficient amountof error, both of omission and of commission, to prevent itsbeing implicitly relied on. He was, therefore, under thenecessity of adopting a general comparison of the variouseditions published previous to the Authors death ; and whenany discrepancy occurred, to adopt the reading which, in hisjudgment, was most in accordance with Bunyans style andcharacteristic mode of expression.
