The ghost bike of Ninian Donald who was killed on May 4 2007 on Kingsland Road, East London UK

In 2003, inspired by a similar project in St Louis Missouri, London cyclists were keen to commemorate their fallen comrades who died in bike accidents with the introduction of ghost bikes. The bikes, painted white, are installed by friends or family and chained up at the location where the cyclist was killed. They serve as a memorial and a reminder of the dangers of city cycling. Ninian Donald, 33, was killed on May 4 2007 at the junction of Kingsland and Whitson roads in Dalston. A skip lorry turned left into his path at the traffic lights, failing to see him in its mirrors. Safety campaigners
and cyclists have demanded that lorries be fitted with better wide-angle mirrors to help drivers spot cyclists. Ninian’s sister, Saskia says he was an experienced and cautious cyclist who would never have jumped red lights. “People laughed at him because he was so safety conscious".
