One January morning I saw a very unusualbird-picture about one of these stacks. The ground wascovered with athick blanketof snow, overwhich the hay hadbeen scattered. Theloosened seeds weretempting bits of foodfor the hungry wildbirds, and as the morn-ing grew warmer a flockcame from the thick un-1 2*23«H!^;; % M derbrush of the woodsnear by. The greaternumber were snow-flakes, but there were afew sparrows and fivebluebirds. On natureswhite background theblue of the bluebirds, the gray of the sparrows,and the brown and white of the snowflakesmade indeed a very pleasant variety of colorand contrast. The sweet disposition and gentle, lovableways of the bluebird are evident even in cap-tivity. In the summer of 1898 I had the plea-sure of carefully studying the habits of old andyoung in that condition. The old birds werekept in a large bird-room with several othervarietie
