The Akureyrarkirkja was designed by Gudjon Samuelsson and contains stained glass windows celebrating a number of people from Icelandic history. Matthias Jochumsson (1835–1920) was an Icelandic playwright, poet and translator who wrote Iceland's national anthem. He died in Akureyri and his house is now a museum.
