The pre-conceived idea of a lions roar is of somethino- noble and o terrible in the extreme ; this, however, is not the casewith the lion of Mesopotamia; the sound which he uttersis like the squall of a child in pain, or the first cry of thejackal at sunset, but infinitely louder, clearer, and moreprolonged.
