George James Allman (1812-1898), Irish naturalist. Allman was born in Cork, and was educated in Belfast. His first inclination was toward law, but he turned instead to the natural sciences. His father was professor of botany at trinity College, Dublin, and Allman succeeded him in 1844 having the year before graduated in medicine. His main work was in the invertebrates such as the hydrozoa, and was the first to use the terms Ã\endodermà and Ã\"ectodermà for the cell walls in coelenterates. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1854, and for many years was president of the Linnean Society."
