View W of the remains of Chapel Finian inside its enclosure on the raised beach at Corwall Port, NW of Port William, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, UK. Built around AD1000 as an oratory & resting place for pilgrims from Ireland & the Isle of Man landing in Luce Bay on their way to visit the shrine of St Ninian at Whithorn Priory. A simple rectangular room, orientated E-W with a doorway at the W end of the S wall. Rendered inside & out, & with six external buttresses; three each on the N & S walls. A thatch roof may have been partly supported by wooden crucks sitting on the buttresses. A stone-lined well, just S of the entrance in the modern wall beside the coast road, may have been considered to have healing & restorative properties. The chapel is dedicated to St Finnian of Moville (d 549), an Irish scholar & monastic founder who was taught at Whithorn before returning to Ireland; he is reputed to have tutored St Columba. The cults of both Finian & Ninian are believed to have been based on the historical figure of Uinniau, a bishop active in the 500s.
