This procedure is fol-lowed with constant care for, say, seven years; the costbeing about $100 per mile per year. At the end of theseven-year period or in the eighth year, the road sur-face should be smooth and probably will look as thoughthe surfacing is good for many more years. It is found, however, that the loss of gravel under traffic and by be-ing blown away is so much and the surfacing plate sothin that if a long, cold and rainy winter should catchthe road in this condition, spring would find the surface. GRAVEL ROAD MAINTENANCE IN DALLASCOUNTY, TEXAS. Dallas County, Texas, has about 480 miles of gravelroads. These roads carry a large amount of automobiletraffic, as is shown by the fact that in the city of Dal-las, with a population of about 125,000 there are 15,000automobiles. There is an abundance of road gravel inthe county, but this is confined to a strip 5 by 10 miles, making it necessary to ship the material to other partsof the county. This brings the cost of the gravel to about$ per cubic yard in place. In North Texas, the summers are usually fairly long Gravel Road Dallas County, Texas. practically destroyed. In the 8th year, therefore, the en-tire surface is gone over with about 40 per cent of theamount of gravel placed in the original construction. Thisbrings the total upkeep cost for the entire 8-year period to$240 per mile per year or 8 per cent of the original maintenance cost has proved ample for the maincountry roads, except a
