Remains of the Peat Store. Surrender lead smelting mill. Surrender Bridge, Swaledale, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Europe
The Peat Store at the Surrender Lead Smelting Mill. Peat was the main fuel used in the lead ore smelting hearths. Peat was cut from the surrounding moors each summer and stored in a long building located on higher ground above the smelting mill. This store was built sometime before 1805 when the earlier smelt mills at Surrender were in use. The building had open sides which helped the peat to dry. It had a thatched heather roof supported on two rows of tapering stone pillars.
