In vitro fertilization. Technician using a microscope to prepare embryos for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. The embryos will be loaded onto a specialised catheter and deposited into a woman's uterus. The embryos, known as blastocysts, are at an early stage in their development. They were created by the micro- injection of sperm into eggs removed from the woman's ovaries. The resulting fertilized eggs (zygotes) were allowed to develop into blastocysts in the laboratory. IVF enables couples with a range of infertility problems to conceive.
