. The uncivilized races of men in all countries of the world : being a comprehensive account of their manners and customs, and of their physical, social, mental, moral and religious characteristics . ford a remarkable in-stance of the influence which is exercisedover man by the pecuharities of the countryin which he is placed. Surrounded by pas-toral tribes, which breed cattle and troublethemselves but little about the cultivationof the ground, the Djour are agriculturists, and have no cattle except goats. The soloreason for this fact is, that the dread tsetse-fly is abundant in the land of Djour, andconsequently neither horse nor ox has achance of life. This terrible insect, harm- less to man and to most animals, is certaindeath to the horse, dog, and ox tribe. It is very little larger than the horse-fly,and its only weapons are a kind of lancet, which projects from its mouth, as one maysee in the gad-fly. Like the gad-fly, thetsetse only causes a temporary irritationwhen it bites a human being, and the stran-gest thing is that it does no harm to calvesuntil they are weaned. It does not sting, but, like the gnat, inserts its sharj) probos-cis into the skin for the purpose of sucking. ORNAMENT. (See pag:e451.) WOMENS KNIVES.(See page 451.)
