Himalayas mountain ranges. Relief artwork showing the mountains of the Himalayan ranges in Asia. North is at top. Most of these mountains, which include nine of the world's highest, are in Nepal and India. The location is shown in the inset as the area bounded in red on the Earth globe. The area shown is around 2400 kilometres long. The highest peaks rise to elevations above 8000 metres, and are permanently capped in snow and ice. Glaciers and rivers channel ice and meltwater down to the Indo-Gangetic Plain to the south, with the Tibetan plateau to the north. These mountains formed as the Indian landmass collided with Asia from around 70 million years ago.
