The Russian General Suvarov founded the city of Tiraspol in 1792. The political forces that declared the Transdniestrian Republic after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 are largely Russian-speaking. Most Moldovans speak Romanian, as Moldova was once part of Romania.
