To prevent the possibility of the sponge dropping, I have added awedge, which fixes the blades of the sponge-holder immovably P. C. Smyly, of Dublin, uses cotton wool attached to a piece of bentaluminium wire by means of strong thread; the instrument is thrownaside after being once used, and fitted with a fresh piece of wool for eachoccasion. Laryngeal Injectors.—Various kinds of syringes have been inventedfor injecting fluids into the laryngeal cavity. I do not recommend thismethod of treatment, but those who wish to practise it will find Hartewelts. Pig. 30.—Hartewelts Drop Injector. Drop Injector (Fig. 30) a very manageable instrument. It is a hollowtube made of vulcanite, and suitably curved for introduction into thelarynx. At the junction of the shank and the handle, on the upper partof the instrument, is a small cavity covered with a drum-like piece ofcaoutchouc and communicating with the interior of the tube.
