Wadi Bani Kharus, Oman, Arabian Peninsula, Middle East. Terraced fields benefitting from irrigation by aflaj (singular, falaj), a water distribution system whereby mountain spring water is conveyed to fields through a system of canals and channels. The aflaj systems are aaid to date back to a Persian origin. Through their use, even dry, arid mountain valleys can feed people making their homes in these areas that, in former times, offered refuge from unfriendly raiders and invaders. These fields contain date palms, onions, garlic, beans, and other vegetables.
