In 1861, the fatherenlisted as a private in the OneHundred and Second PennsylvaniaRegiment, remaining in the Unionarmy until the close of the gallant and meritorious service,he was promoted, by successivesteps, from the ranks to the officeof Colonel, in which capacity he re-turned home with his regiment;he came with his family to UnionCity, Ind., in 1867, where he stillresides. G-eorge, his son, and thesubject of this sketch, attended theschools of Pittsbui^h until the re-moval of the family to Union City,and completed his of studyin the schools of this place. At theage of sixteen years, he entered. M^-^^-^^^^i^^^- , upon an apprenticeship at the print-ers trade, in the office of the UnionTVmes, of which John Commons wasthen editor. Three years later, hepurchased the TimM, and has eversince continued as editor and pro-prietor of this paper. Under hismanagement its sphere of useful-ness has been extended, and it isrecognized among the leading andinfluential journals of Eastern In-diana. It is a faithful exponent ofthe principles of the Republicanparty, and enjoys a very satisfactorycirculation. Its editor, though ayoung man, has developed markedability in his chosen profession, andoccupies a high rank in the journal-iptic fraternity, while his socialstandiiifj; is of the best.
