Residents of Songpan (Songzhou) on the Tibetan Plateau cleaning the bodies of caterpillars infected with Ophiocordyceps sinensis (formerly known as Cordyceps sinensis), an entomopathogenic fungus (a fungus that grows on insects) found in mountainous regions of Nepal and Tibet. O. sinensis parasitizes the moths of the Thitarodes genus in the ghost moth family, Hepialidae; specifically species from the Tibetan Plateau, and the Himalayas. China. Overharvesting and overexploitation have led to the classification of O. sinensis as an endangered species in China. (67)
