Burnt Joshua Trees, Queen Valley, Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA (May 2007)

Desert wild fires are common natural occurrences in Joshua Tree National Park. However in many places in the park non-native exotic grasses such as red brome and cheatgrass are now covering once empty spaces so lightning ignited fires tend to cover larger areas and cause more damage in recent years. The desert does grow back but the recovery of native plants such as Joshua Trees is slow and can take many years. This photo was taken in May 2007 in Queen Valley near intersection of Park Boulevard and Geology Tour Road on the site of lightning-ignited fire called Geo fire that occurred almost 11 months before in July 2006. These trees are not likely to recover from the fire
