An Italian cup-hilt rapier, (Brescia?), circa 1620. Slender thrusting blade of flattened hexagonal section, fullered at the base on both sides. The fuller is marked "TOMAS IALA". Richly pierced cup-guard with depictions of harpies and birds amid leafy tendrils. Above it a guard of winding ridged bars extending to form the knuckle-bow and S-shaped curved quillons.
