Flodden Monument near Branxton Northumberland England

The battle of Flodden 9 September 1513 saw the death of James IV King of Scotland as well as a high proportion of the feudal ruling class of that country It is thought that as many as 9 000 Scots were killed while the English lost ca 5 000 Although the Scots army was well provisioned and prepared and was armed with the latest artillery and with Swiss style 18 foot pikes they faced better trained English troops with lighter field artillery and were decimated by the 8 foot bills of the English when their pikemen broke ranks in the boggy ground at the centre of the battlefield Flodden is also remembered for its savagery No quarter was given on either side and hardly any prisoners were taken for ransom usually a profitable sideline to battles of the period
