A traditional working narrow boat passes along the northern stretches of the Trent and Mersey canal. The scene is autumnal as evidenced by the smoke curling from the chimney of the cabin on the boat. The boat is a narrow boat by virtue of the fact that it is no wider, the beam, than 7 feet, wide, and normally nowadays 6ft 10inches, wide. The Trent and Mersey canal runs from Preston Brook near Runcorn in Cheshire for just over 93 miles to Derwent mouth near Shardlow in Derbyshire. This narrow boat is seen about 1 mile from the northern end of the canal at Dutton and is working southwards. The owner provides a service to fellow boat owners by supplying solid fuels, coal, coke and smokeless fuels along with diesel and bottled gas.
