A guard's helmet, mid-19th century. Black lacquered leather skull, metal mounts of gold-plated non-ferrous metal. Emblem with papal insignia and relief inscription "Pius IX" on finely embossed ground. Flat chinscales. Gold-plated spike with bright horse-hair plume (trimmed). Green leather lining on the undersides of both peaks, black leather sweatband (damaged), "Stapa XII" written on the inside of the skull. Signs of wear and age.
