He en-tered Amherst Colle2:e in 1823,and there exhibited great pow-ers of elocution. In 1826 hebecame a preacher in the Presby-terian church. In 1830 he wasemployed as a lecturer by thePennsylvania Temperance Soci-ety. He soon came to the beliefthat the only permanent remedyfor intemperance, and the onlyprevention and cure of disease,lay in the adoptionof correct habits ofliving ; and he be-came the advocate of.
