Sometimes a red line running acrossthe forehead, nearly parallel to the coronal suture, is produced bythe pressure of the side wall. Pressure upon the ophthalmic vein, when it occurs, leads to (Edem-atous swelling and hyperemia of the lid, and to increased secretionfrom the conjunctiva. Influence of the Pressure of the Pelvis upon the Cranial Bones.— Hie BO-Called molding of the childs head, by which it 18 made to con-form to the si/.e and shape of the pelvis, is chiefly effected by the dis-placements and alterations in the form of the cranial bones. Of the. CONTRACTED PELVES. 401 displacements, the most important consists in the overriding of thebones at the principal sutures. The most eommon site is along thesagittal suture. Usually the posterior parietal bone is flattened and depressed beneath its fellow. At the same time the curvature of theanterior or presenting parietal hone is increased. In transverse nar-rowing, the occipital hone is depressed along the lambdoidal suture. The position of the frontal hones at the coronal suture is Bubject to avariety of influences. As a rule, however, they are depressed beneath the parietal hones. Overlapping often does not extend the entirelength of a suture, but may exist in one part, while in another thebones may occupy the same level. Sometimes a displacement takesplace between the two lateral halves of the head in the direction ofthe oceipito-frontal diameter. This movement is supposed to be dueto the influence of the promontory, which pushes the posterior
