Worcester Cathedral, view from the river quay

In 1062 St Wulfstan, Prior of the existing monastery, was appointed Bishop of Worcester, and in 1084 the building of the first cathedral began. Construction continued until the end of the fourteenth century, when the magnificent North Porch was built and decorated. Worcester Cathedral has been a place of Royal burial, King John being buried there in 1216 and Prince Arthur in 1502. The monastery was active until Henry VIII dissolved it in 1540. Worcester Cathedral survived subsequent disruptions, and the first major renovation works were carried out during the reign of Queen Victoria. The picture was drawn by C. Warren and engraved by Benjamin Winkles.
