Johan Nieuhof (1618-1672), Dutch traveller. Nieuhof travelled in Brazil in the 1640s, China in the 1650s, and worked in the 1660s for the Dutch East India Company. Many translations were published of his accounts of his travels in Brazil, India and China. This 1655 artwork is from the 1693 work 'Het gezandtschap der Neerlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie, aan den grooten Tartarischen Cham, den tegenwoordigen keizer van China', which described the first embassy of the Dutch East India Company to the court of the Emperor of China during the years 1655 to 1657, led by Pieter de Goyer and Jakob de Keyserby.
