Following Alexander s assassination in 1881 designs for a memorial by both Walter Runeberg and Johannes Takanen were accepted When Takanen died before construction Runeberg included elements of Takanen s design The pedestal has four symbolic figures on red granite representing Law Light Peace and Work The work was unveiled in 1894
