Junius Brutus Booth, distin-guished as a tragedian of greatability, was born in London, Eng-land, in 1796. Before going uponthe stage, in 1813, he tried his handat seamanship in the navy, at print-ing, at studying law, and at paintingand sculpture. For about two yearshe played in minor theaters in Eng-land and other parts of Europe, andthen, in 1815, made his first appearanceat Covent Garden theater, in there he went into country districtsand performed, and having succeeded inplaying Sir Giles Overreach with dis-tinguished effect, he was recalled toCovent Garden in 1817, where he per-formed Richard III.
