'Portrait of Tsar Michael Feodorovich', first half of 19th century. Copy of an earlier portrait. Detail. Michael I (1596-1645) was the first Romanov tsar of Russia. He came to the throne in 1613 after the period of instability known as the Time of Troubles, but Russia was effectively ruled by his father, Patriarch Filaret, from the time he returned from captivity in Poland in 1619 until his death in 1633. Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg.
