The Romans crossed the river Humber from here at "Flashmire". Winteringham haven, North Lincolnshire. They marched from the south of England up the now A15 and crossed over to Brough in Yorkshire and then on to York. Water levels and climate change? In those days the water levels were quite clearly much lower as can be proved by looking at the sunken forest at Cleethorpes, a holiday resort just to the south, there are the remains of at least 40 mature trees about 200 metres out from the shore line. Clearly at one time the sea never came in as far as it does today. Also, at South Ferriby local archaeologists say that there is a large roman settlement site that is now well away from today's shoreline and deep under today's Humber mud. So, Romans and everyone else could easily cross the Humber at low tide. Ironically we now cross the Humber at almost the same place over the great Humber Bridge.
