HENRY BUDD. 399 The Nepowewin Mission is situated on the north bankof the Saskatchewan, opposite to Fort a la Nepowewin Mission and Fort a la Corne. The Eev. Henry Budd, the native resident missionary,was ordained priest in 1853 at Cumberland Station, nearthe mouth of the Pasquia river. He had long labouredat this missionary outpost as a catechist. So early as1840 he set out from Red River Settlement to makepreparations for erecting a church and establishing astation at the mouth of the Pasquia. In 1852 Mr. Buddstarted from Christchurch, Cumberland station, for theNepowewin, where he arrived on the 8th of September,and on the 13th of the same month commenced to cleara small piece of ground on the river bank, opposite toFort a la Corne, for the erection of missionary name Nepowewin is derived from an Indian ex-pression signifying the standing place, where the nativesare accustomed to await the arrival of the Hudsons BayCompanys boats, as they are tracke
