Thusalmost four score years have come and gone sincethis, one of the oldest and fairest daughters of themother county came into existence; and the eventsand changes, discoveries and inventions that havetaken place within this period have indeed beenmany. At the time of the organization of Chariton county, all thatterritory now eml)raced in the counties of Linn, Sullivan, Putnam, anda inirt of Adair and Schuyler were embraced by its boundaries. Thecounty seat was established at the town of Chariton, situated in thesouthern part of the county near the mouth of the two rivers of thesame name, which streams were called after some early French traderswho had a fur agency at this point.
