Lower Road, Dean Head, Scammonden, crossing snowy hill slope fields to sun sinking dark shade clouds, South Pennines, Kirklees, West Yorkshire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the UK's coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December temperature in the UK was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature reached minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 experienced two spells of severe winter weather with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The first spell lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The Uk was under the influence of a prolonged north-easterly airstream drawing bitterly cold air from Northern Europe and Siberia.
