. The American florist : a weekly journal for the trade. Floriculture; Florists. 456 The American Florist Dec. s. San Francisco. The fall exhibition and chrysanthennim show of the California State Floral Society was held the first week in Novem- ber at the Mechanics'Pavilion, the largest hall in San Francisco. It was a dazzling spectacle and a great success. It is doubtful if any where in the I'nited States can better out-of-door grown chrysanthemum blooms be secured than in the temperedclimateof California and the best examplesof these wereat the exhibition. There were greenhouse blooms also but the open-air beauties seemed nearest to nature and were most admired. There were about fifty exhibitors, the displays including besides chrysanthe- mums, roses, carnations, sweet peas, violets, rex begonias, ferns of many sorts, pelargoniums, coleus and orchids. There were many cash premiums besides art prizes. The show was well attended, especially evenings when there was good music, and dancing was allowed in the galleries of the hall. One of the novel features of the show was the prize guessing contest of the Sherwood Hall Nursery Company. .\ prize of fifty dollars was offered the visitor who made the best guess of the number of petals in a big open-air "Prince" chry- santhemum. A separate prize of twenty- five dollars was oflFered to the orphan visitors who were the guests of the Sher- wood Hall Nursery Co. one afternoon. It proved a novel proposition to most of the guessers and estimates ran all the way from 75 to 25,000. There proved to be just five hundred and twelve petals in the bloom and three guessers divided the prize. The show was a success financially, the receipts for admission not only paying all expenses but aslightindebtednessremain- ing from the spring floral exhibition. The society will have its next exhibition in May. S. flREGfl LUTESGEN8 SPECIMEHS « TO ? EACH. . CHESTNUT HILL. PHILADELPHIA. PA. Doz. Hundred 2 YcBrOholce Assortment
