Itis highly contagious and often spreads with great rapidity and Highlypertinacity in schools and childrens homes where great numbers contasious-of inmates are crowded in comparatively small rooms. The eruption consists of ring-shaped, slightly elevated, scaly, reddish, grayish, or greenish-yellow patches. The hair over theaffected areas becomes brittle and loose and falls out, leaving Brittienessbehind bald and shiny Fig. 205.—Trichophyton Tonsurans—Threads and Chains ofSpores. X 400. (After Biseosero.) At times the eruption is accompanied by severe local inflamma-tion and exudation of a yellowish, viscid or gelatinous secretion—a condition generally described as tinea kerion. In the treatment of ringworm of the scalp it is essential notonly to prevent spreading of the disease from one child to theother, but also autoinoculation from one part of the scalp to theother. This is best accomplished by sterilization (before andafter using) of the hair clippers, scissors, combs, etc., andthorough scrubbing of the scalp with the tincture of green soaptwice daily, and immediately after a haircut. In an epidemic at an orphan asylum comprising nearly 400cases of ringworm of the scalp, I found the following method oftreatment exceedingly serviceable :— ft Acidi carbolici, Ol
