. Florists' review [microform]. Floriculture. 94 The Florists^ Review Mabch 6. 1919 Greenhouse Heating CAN THE BOILER DO MORE? The boiler I am using has a firebox 4x4 feet and about four and one-half feet high, and contains forty-two 2%- inch flues, ten feet long. At the present time I am heating two houses, each 18x100, to 50 degrees; one lean-to 8x100 to 50 degrees; one house 14x100 to 50 degrees; one house 12x50 to 60 degrees, and one house 8x30, The three largest houses are twelve feet high to the ridge. Should this boiler be able to heat more glass without much forcing? There are two 6-inch flow pipes from the boiler and two 6-inch returns to the boiler. In the houses the flows are 2^-inch and the returns are 2-inch. Zero weather is not unusual here and the mercury has dropped as low as 15 or 20 degrees be- low zero. If the present boiler is used to heat additional space, will more flows from the boiler be needed? A. E. S.—Mont. The letter does not state whether steam or hot water is used for heating, but from the sizes given for the flows and returns we infer that it is hot water. If there is no glass in the side walls, it should be possible to heat the houses described with about 2,000 square feet of radiation. We judge that the boiler is rated at about twenty-five horsepower. At a low estimate, this should heat about 3,200 square feet of radiating surface, which would be sufficient for 3,600 square feet of glass to be heated to 60 degrees, in addition to the present houses. One 6-inch flow pipe and a re- turn of the same size should be able to handle the radiation in the present houses, which would leave a flow and return of the same size for additional houses. To some extent the efficiency of the main flow and return pipes, as well as that of the coils, will depend on the height of the coils above the top of the boiler. The number of the flow and return pipes is not given and may be slightly modified according to the kind of pipe on hand, but for heating
